چکیده

A window-based flow control mechanism is a sort of feedback-based congestion control mechanisms, and has been widely used in current TCP/IP networks. Recently proposed TCP Vegas is another version of the TCP mechanism and has potential to achieve much better performance than current TCP Tahoe and Reno. However, it has not been fully investigated how to determine control parameters of TCP Vegas. In this paper, we focus on a window-based flow control mechanism based on a congestion avoidance mechanism of TCP Vegas. We first present a control theoretic analysis for its stability. We then discuss several drawbacks of the window-based flow control mechanism, being inherited from TCP Vegas, through simulation experiments. We finally investigate how these drawbacks is solved by incorporating the ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) mechanism into the window-based flow control mechanism.

Application of control theory to a window-based flow control mechanism with ECN routers

A window-based flow control mechanism is a sort of feedback-based congestion control mechanisms, and has been widely used in current TCP/IP networks. Recently, use of an ECN (Explicit Congestion Notification) mechanism as congestion indication from the network to source hosts has been actively discussed in the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force). In this paper, we focus on a window-based flo...

Fuzzy Explicit Window Adaptation: a Method to Further Enhance TCP Performance

In the current Internet, standard TCP congestion control is based on segment loss events possibly assisted by simple explicit router feedback mechanisms like Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN). The performance of TCP congestion control can be improved if a more sophisticated Router Congestion Feedback (RCF) mechanism than ECN is used. One of such approaches is Explicit Window Adaptation (EW...

Tcp Congestion Avoidance Using Explicit Buffer Notification

This paper proposes to modify the TCP congestion control mechanism by allowing network routers to supply Explicit Buffer Notification (EBN) to the TCP data sender. The TCP sender runs an algorithm that uses the EBN feedback to compute the control window. The EBN plays the role of a generalized Advertised Window so that the EBN TCP results to be a natural extension of the current TCP flow contro...

Resource Control for the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) Mechanism in IEEE 802.11e

We investigate the problem of efficient resource control for elastic traffic in IEEE 802.11e’s Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism. Our approach considers an economic modelling framework based on congestion pricing that captures how various factors, such as the probability of attempting to transmit a frame, the use of the basic CSMA/CA or the RTS/CTS procedure, and the physical...
